Q:

Dear APF - I am looking for ways to get better motiviated about working out. In the past, I've taken weight training and nutrition much more seriously. How do I restore the positive mental state that allowed me to achieve great results in the past? Thanks!

A:

          First of all do not beat yourself up about the lagging motivation.  We all have periods in our lives when we are more or less motivated to do things.  When this lack of motivation applies to your workouts, which is something you enjoy physically and psychologically, then you must first look at the workout itself.  Is it time to change the routine?  Is it time to change your fitness goals?  Is it time to make some goals?  

After you have looked at the workout itself then you must look at factors outside the workout.  Is the big project at work stressing you out?  Have your days become overscheduled?  Have you let the workouts become something you just squeeze in rather than something you prioritize?  

Once you have asked yourself these questions and have identified the causes of your lack of motivation then take steps to prioritize your workout again.  Remember, You workout because you like it!
